Joe Kandefer Obituary, Death Cause – Kandefer was born in Torrington on May 22, 1946. He was the son of Daniel H. Kandefer, Sr. and Julia E. (Rybak) Kandefer, both of whom passed away before he was born. Mr. Kandefer had lived in the city his entire life. The year 1968 marked Dan’s graduation from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He had served in the United States Navy Reserve. Dan worked for the State of Connecticut as a Personnel Manager for a total of 35 years until taking early retirement.

He spent the first 10 years of his career in Hartford, and the latter 25 years of his career at the Southbury Training School. Mr. Kandefer attended both the current St. John Paul the Great Parish in Torrington as well as the previous iteration of St. Mary’s Church. He was a communicant of both churches. Dan was a voracious reader who cherished the opportunity to elaborate on what he had learned. He was notoriously known for his love of making jokes, and he had an extensive collection of jokes in his repertory.

Dan enjoyed the great outdoors immensely, including gardening and going on hunting trips. The pumpkins that he raised at his first home on Red Mountain Avenue were of such a large size that they were worthy of winning an award. Dan was knowledgeable with a wide array of artillery thanks to his membership in the National Rifle Association (NRA). He was a pillar of strength for his family, a loyal friend to everyone, and a selfless individual who would go out of his way to assist anyone who was struggling. Dan’s biggest love was unquestionably his family, particularly his three grandchildren. He delighted in watching them compete in various sports, play strategic games such as cards or chess, or simply swim in his pool.
